In June 1940 Nina’s family lost their home to the Russians and shortly afterwards were in hiding from the Nazis. After escaping with her mother and grandmother through the forests from Poland to Hungary, they were reunited as a family, only to face a near-death train trip and a labour camp. Nina then spent time alone in an orphanage before reuniting with her family in Budapest. The family migrated to Australia after the war. The early years in Melbourne were difficult, but Nina went on to have a happy marriage, a family and, 16 years after her husband died, marriage to an old friend.
