In 1949 a 25-years-old woman disembarked at Port Melbourne, Victoria to be welcomed by strangers. She had come from afar, after 10 years in which she had been robbed of her family, her people, her friends, her home and her adolescence. She is Jewish. She had survived. Saba Feniger’s memoir focuses on herself and her family, their tragic dislocation and fragmentation, and their subsequent survival. She describes her book’s main purpose as a source of family history for her children and grandchildren and, secondly, as a human document which bears witness to a period of history never to be forgotten.
