The Keeper of Miracles

Each testimony of survival is a miracle in itself. This is why Phillip earned the nickname 'the Keeper of Miracles'. For more than 30 years, Phillip Maisel worked selflessly to record the harrowing stories of Holocaust survivors. Volunteering at Melbourne Holocaust Museum (formerly Jewish Holocaust Centre), Phillip listened tirelessly to their memories, preserved their voices and proved time and time again, just how healing storytelling can be. But, for Phillip, confronting and overcoming trauma was also personal. A Holocaust survivor himself, he, too, kept unthinkable stories of triumph and tragedy, cruelty and hope. "This is my responsibility and my privilege: to be custodian of their memories, to be able to pass their stories on to the next generation - for me, this will be the greatest miracle of all."
